The binary switch has two states: off and on, or negative and positive. This is how computers work; everything that computers do boils down to the binary switch being in the negative or positive position. Artists also operate in modes of being switched on and off, especially when artists enter a collaborative relationship where their inspirations, methods and mediums perform a push/pull on each other resulting in mixed medias, hybrids, and mash-ups.
Binary, curated by Lauren and Francesco Levato, is an exhibition of Chicago artists who have entered a binary relationship with other artists, and sometimes writers, to create new visual artworks. Artists will use Flash, Final Cut Pro, SMS Text Messaging, iPhones, Photoshop, Garage Band, and other digital manipulations to collaborate with other artists using film, fiber, drawing, screen printing, and other mediums.
